May is Cemetery Appreciation Month

The State Association for the Preservation of Iowa Cemeteries (SAPIC) members sponsor the “May is Cemetery Appreciation Month” with Gov. Reynolds signing the proclamation.

Iowa legislators created SAPIC in 1996 with the purpose of identifying all Iowa cemeteries for preservation, maintenance and creating legislation for access. Some of Iowa’s 5,000 cemeteries are situated on gravel roads or footpaths surrounded by cattle in pastures and grain fields under volunteer jurisdiction; others are located in cities maintained by active political units or owned by perpetual care societies.

Flags will fly at many cemeteries this Memorial Day as we remember our fallen veterans and the freedom we enjoy. It is a time to remember our cemeteries are a sanctuary of each life for shared memories that provide comfort to the living.
